Sadbhavana Party, a key partner in the Madhesi Morch, has launched separate protest programs effective from Sunday.

Questions are now being asked why the party had to launch protest programs separately even as the Morch has not called off its protest and is negotiating with the major parties on the Madhes issues.

In a separate press meet held on Saturday, Mahato-led party clarified that it has not snapped relations with the Morcha. Fine. But the question is why the party took the move without consulting the Morcha partners.

Analysts say there are at least three reasons behind Mahato’s move.

Firstly, it is the Biratnagar incident. The border protest began to lose its effectiveness after India increased supply of petroleum products to Nepal via alternative routes.

Mahato proposed that the Morch block other routes too. But the Morcha declined. Unhappy with the Morcha partners, Mahato staged a protest program at the Biratnagar border point last week. Police baton-charged the protestors and Mahato sustained head injuries.

Mahato was admitted to Biratnagar Hospital and then to BP Koirala Institute of Health and Sciences in Dharan. In a sign of widening differences in the Morcha, none of the leaders of the agitating parties went to the hospital to meet Mahato.

Chief of the Sanghiya Samahjwadi Party, Upendra Yadav accused Mahato of protesting at Biratnagar border point for cheap popularity.

“They even did not bother to object to the police action, let alone announce programs in protest against the government move,” said a Sadbhawana party leader.
